“The way you train is the way you’ll fight.”
San Shou is a Chinese Kung Fu that was originally developed by the Chinese Military based upon intense studies of various traditional
Kung Fu styles in the early 1900s. It is a complete self-defense that teaches punching, kicking, leg kicks, knee, elbows, kick catches,
sweeps, takedowns, and throws. San Shou was created by the Chinese Military specifically for close-quarter combat.
Techniques in San Shou are executed standing up at all times. The creators of this style believe in the theory that the majority of the
attacks on a person happen when he or she is standing up. Basing their style on this study, the Chinese Military took what they believe
is the most effective self-defense techniques on different styles of Kung Fu.
In 1991, San Shou became a sport in China. The matches are referred to as San Da, an older term, which was originally used to describe
full contact fighting. Since then, China and the United States established professional matches on both countries.
San Da or Sport San Shou utilizes striking, kicking, and wrestling but not ground grappling. San Shou matches conducted in a manner
similar to other Kickboxing styles such as Muay Thai. Recently, San Shou fighters have fought successfully in other full contact fighting
sports such as K-1 Kickboxing and Japan Shootboxing.
